ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Fort Bliss soldier died in a fiery car crash on Spur 601 Liberty Expressway at about 2 a.m. on June 1 when her car hit a curb and caught fire — authorities are still investigating the incident.  El Paso Times

CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday morning, CBP officers arrested a 21-year-old man at Ysleta Port of Entry when a low-energy portal scan at 6:46 a.m. revealed brown packages—tested positive for 27.1 pounds of cocaine—and he now faces drug smuggling charges.  KFOX14

  • El Paso County Parks launches its Parks After Sunset movie series that will run on select Fridays through July 25 with free film screenings, pet adoptions, and splash events. Downtown prepares for the Sal y Limón Festival on Saturday, June 7 with tacos, lucha libre, and live music headlined by Los Tucanes de Tijuana+.  El Paso Matters

EDUCATION NEWS

  • EPISD superintendent Diana Sayavedra resigned and will serve as an advisor while CFO Martha Aguirre becomes the interim superintendent on June 15+ Both board members praised Aguirre’s leadership for her role in keeping the district stable during the transition.  KVIA
  • Diana Sayavedra resigned as El Paso Independent School District Superintendent after entering a voluntary retirement agreement — Chief Financial Officer Martha Aguirre will serve as interim superintendent starting June 15. Aguirre said she will focus on keeping the district stable while Sayavedra provides advisory support until she retires on Jan 30.  KVIA
  • UTEP engineering students on the Sun City Summit Rocket Team showed their lab and rocket Sandstorm to ABC-7 during a behind-the-scenes tour today. The team will compete in the International Rocket Engineering Competition in Midland from June 9 to 14 + they hope their tests match their simulation to prove a year of hard work.  KVIA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The El Paso Zoo announced spring births of several animal babies including an Inca Tern chick, a Magellanic Penguin chick, two pronghorn fawns, two Marbled Teal ducklings, and three White-Nosed Coati kits. The births include species that are near threatened and support the zoo's conservation efforts as guests can visit the 35-acre park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.  El Paso Times
