CRIME NEWS

  • El Paso police identified Jose Jesus Gonzalez Jr. as the man fatally shot at Nations Tobin Park in Northeast El Paso on Friday morning and said two other men were injured while suspect Robert Joseph Privett was arrested on a murder charge.  El Paso Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Tech Health El Paso named Dr. Eric M. Rohren as the new dean of the Foster School of Medicine—he will start in October, replacing Dr. Richard Lange who will focus on his role as president. The radiologist comes from Baylor College of Medicine and plans to boost research, education and patient care in the Paso del Norte region.  El Paso Matters
  • The EPISD board adopted a $541.2 million budget with a $6 million deficit for the 2025-26 school year and approved a new compensation plan that raises teachers’ pay and increases employee health care costs—these changes come as the district plans to adjust class sizes and reviews its attendance policy to better manage state funding. Board members said the moves aim to maintain a healthy fund balance while addressing long-standing operational challenges.  El Paso Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso County Commissioners Court voted on Monday for a resolution that asks federal agents to use a clear and fair process and give timely notice when taking people into custody—commissioner David Stout said that rounding up people based on appearance can hurt any community—urging all local governments to adopt similar guidelines.  KTSM
  • El Paso Water is offering free sandbags as storms and showers increase flooding risk in the Borderland. Residents must pick them up at the Stormwater Operations Center at 4801 Fred Wilson Ave.—each visit allows up to 10 bags if customers show a Texas ID or water bill and are advised to bring help if they need assistance with heavy loads.  KFOX14
  • The City Council evaluated three top officials in a closed session on Monday, June 23 — reviewing the roles of the city manager, city attorney, and chief internal auditor — with no sign of job loss. Today the council is set to likely deny El Paso Electric’s $93M rate increase that would raise customer bills by $22.39 a month.  El Paso Times
