Good morning, El Paso. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 27th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating a shooting at 7300 Lilac in the Lower Valley at around 8:51 p.m. — three male victims were involved, with one carried by fire medical services and two self-transporting — and residents are urged to exercise caution in the area.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tara Lopez’s book Chuco Punk shows El Paso’s DIY punk scene that began when local families helped put on youth shows in garages and backyards in the 1990s—this book highlights how the music still shapes our city. Lopez will join a roundtable discussion tomorrow at Old Sheepdog Brewery at 3900 Rosa Ave.  El Paso Matters

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ysleta ISD approved a $420.2 million budget with a $22.2 million deficit (which may drop its savings to $10.8 million and force it to take a $49 million loan for payroll) and raised pay for teachers and staff, with teachers getting between $2,500 and $5,000 more while other workers received small increases. The board said there will be no layoffs, but the district risks money troubles if costs are not cut or extra funding is not found.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials said fireworks are banned in El Paso ahead of the July 4 weekend — anyone selling, using, or possessing them may face fines up to $500 and receive a Class C Misdemeanor as law enforcement monitors for sparks that could start fires.  KVIA
  • The El Paso Fire Department is expanding its non-emergency response with six new high-tech SUVs today. The vehicles—equipped with onboard computers and GPS tracking—support a Mobile Integrated Health Team of 12 paramedics to handle urgent cases like overdoses, fall risks, and mental health crises.  KFOX14
  • A federal audit released in May found that the ICE processing center on Montana Avenue did not meet 15 key compliance areas—such as problems with detainee supervision, staff duties, and access to confidential support. The review from July 2024 noted failures in proper medical checks and other safeguards, and Congresswoman Veronica Escobar toured the center last week.  KFOX14
  • Governor Abbott ordered state agencies to form a response team against the screwworm—an invasive fly that can harm livestock and wildlife. The team will work with local landowners and business leaders to share information and prepare for a possible outbreak.  El Paso Times
