ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A motorcyclist named Filbert Candelaria died when his bike hit a Nissan on Socorro Road early Saturday morning, and Socorro Police responded at about 1:25 a.m.—the Nissan occupants were unharmed while County Sheriff’s Office Special Traffic Investigators are handling the case.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • In March 1960, the El Paso Times printed a series called 'Notes On El Paso: Did You Know?' that shared brief facts about our city including its 82 percent sunny days, its location at the lowest pass through the Rocky Mountains, and its status as the farthest west city in Texas. The series detailed local landmarks—such as the 42-foot Christ of the Rockies—and milestones in education, trade, and industry that highlighted El Paso’s unique heritage.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso pioneer J. Fisher Satterthwaite recalled how he brought three alligators from New Orleans in a cigar box to San Jacinto Plaza and built the park’s first pond while serving as the city’s first park commissioner plus he described the lawless days when citizens armed with shotguns helped restore order, as he told his story to the El Paso Herald on Sept. 16.  El Paso Times

  • About 15 Girl Scouts attended the four-day She Builds 'n Drills summer camp held at a Girl Scouts property in the northeast where they learned home repair skills—such as patching a wall, basic plumbing, and woodworking—and left with certificates and tool bags. The camp, hosted by Rebuilding Together, aimed to build confidence and introduce vital construction skills to young women.  El Paso Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two days after heavy rainfall flooded several homes on Palomino Street in Northeast El Paso, Ana Perez said her home was the fourth to flood in four years and now she faces uncertainty over her FEMA flood insurance claim because the area had been removed from high-risk status. Perez said she must buy bare-bones replacements for damaged furniture and appliances while FEMA warns that standard home insurance does not cover flood damage — leaving homeowners with more repair challenges.  KTSM

HEALTH NEWS

  • El Paso Children’s Hospital opened its second urgent care facility at 13467 Eastlake Boulevard in Horizon City and held a block party with food and music from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. County officials said the center will offer quicker care than an emergency room for children when their pediatrician is unavailable — meeting a growing need for local families.  KVIA
