  • Burlington Stores Inc. announced it will open a new store this fall at Bassett Place mall located at 6101 Gateway West, marking its eighth location in the El Paso and Las Cruces area. The new store will feature a reimagined layout and a new logo—Deals. Brands. Wow!.  KTSM

CRIME NEWS

  • At 4 a.m. Saturday, May 10th, two men broke into the smoke shop at 1475 George Dieter in East El Paso, stealing nearly $3K in merchandise and causing about $1,200 in damage—Crime Stoppers urges anyone with information to call.  KTSM
  • A 44-year-old owner of Road Runner Disposal was arrested on July 3 by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office for illegally dumping over 1,000 pounds of waste—over 200 cubic feet was found on a private lot on North Ascension Street on June 23—and his bond was set at $2,000.  KTSM
  • An El Paso woman —Rebecca Herrera— drove the wrong way at 99 mph on U.S. 54 while drunk in a 2023 crash in Otero County that took the life of 21-year-old Isaac Garcia, and she was found guilty of vehicular homicide while she now awaits sentencing and faces up to 18 years in prison.  El Paso Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since July 1, car buyers have received metal license plates instead of paper temporary tags due to the new Senate Bill 1902 law, which aims to stop criminals from using fake tags (introducing four limited-use plates to replace six temporary ones).  El Paso Times
  • The Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces said it opposes any border barrier construction near Mount Cristo Rey because it would harm the site’s historic and religious significance — the border project by CBP in Doña Ana County now faces additional review after the comment period closed on July 3. The Diocese urged federal agencies to consider alternative strategies that respect the landmark and its legacy.  KTSM
  • UTEP creative writing professor Tim Z. Hernandez is raising $25,000 via GoFundMe to fund a documentary on the 1948 deportation flight that killed 28 migrant workers — the film is set for festival showings in August while the city’s preliminary budget proposals may raise homeowners’ city taxes by about $100 if property values increase. The University of Texas System Board approved a 5-foot sculpture gift from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation — costing about $40,000 and planned for installation at UTEP to mark the local health care partnership.  El Paso Matters

  • A study at UTEP shows that alcohol harms male rats' decision-making more than it does for females. The research found that male rats made poorer choices for up to 2 months after drinking—while female rats stayed close to their normal behaviors, even after drinking more by body weight.  KVIA
