ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • NM Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham held a news conference at 9 a.m. on July 10 at the Emergency Operations Center to update on flood response efforts in Ruidoso after heavy rains triggered flash floods on July 8 that led to 65 rescues, the deaths of a man and two children—members of a Fort Bliss family—and the displacement of 20 residents while El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson expressed his condolences.  KTSM
  • A Fort Bliss soldier and his wife were hospitalized with serious injuries in the Ruidoso floods that struck during a family vacation at an RV park and claimed the lives of their 4-year-old and 7-year-old children—emergency responders confirmed the deaths as local officials offered their condolences.  KVIA

  • Eight defense attorneys were paid $745,000 to defend Patrick Crusius—who killed 23 people at a local Walmart in 2019—while court records show his overall legal fees reached $1.3 million as taxpayers covered his costs.  El Paso Matters

  • El Paso-area school districts are preparing for the 2025 to 26 school year amid leadership changes, budget strains and new state rules on cellphones and teacher pay. Multiple districts have set varied first days—from Monday, July 21 for Clint ISD to Monday, Aug. 4 for El Paso ISD—while families also get ready for tax-free shopping and back-to-school events in the coming weeks.  El Paso Matters

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • US Rep. Veronica Escobar was blocked from entering the ICE processing facility on Montana Ave on July 9 — she had provided 24 hours notice for her oversight visit. Her office said the denial violates congressional authority — it comes amid concerns over mistreatment at the facility and tighter visit rules.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar introduced a bill on June 30 that would let law enforcement prosecute mass shootings as acts of terrorism—she and Congressman Seth Moulton explained that the law would enable tougher investigations of terrorist networks and related crimes. The legislation, aimed at attacks with three or more deaths, is set to provide authorities with more tools to prevent future incidents.  KFOX14
