- ➤ Estefania Primera—36-year-old alleged Tren de Aragua gang member known as La Barbie—began her jury trial Friday at 8 a.m. at the Gateway Hotel in downtown El Paso, where she faces second-degree human trafficking charges that could cost her 2 to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted. - ➤ Graciela Sahs, a 26-year-old from El Paso buying fireworks, was killed in a hit-and-run on July 3 in Sunland Park when a Ford Ranger struck her and another pedestrian at 10:30 p.m.—New Mexico State Police later arrested 61-year-old Vicente Vasquez on charges including homicide by vehicle and leaving the scene. - ➤ Several Borderland school districts will offer free school supplies for students during a series of back-to-school events. El Paso ISD will host its Fiesta from July 29 to 31 while IDEA Public Schools gives away backpacks today from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.—other districts including Anthony, Clint and LCPS will also distribute supplies on scheduled days. - ➤ On July 8, a power outage at Marathon Refinery caused large plumes of black smoke and flames to burst from its smokestacks around 5:30 p.m., leaving El Paso residents demanding clearer communication— they want a community meeting, a 24/7 hotline and regular air quality updates to know how to stay safe. - ➤ Michael Quinonez was sworn in as the new Santa Teresa Port of Entry director on July 10 at the War Eagles Air Museum in El Paso and took over customs and agriculture inspections from Director Hector Mancha, who passed the guidon (a symbol of authority) during the ceremony.
