COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Female volunteers in El Paso are repairing homes for low-income, disabled, or elderly residents through the SHEBuilds program—a partnership between Rebuilding Together El Paso and Marathon Petroleum. Over 250 women have received hands-on training in tasks like tub-to-shower conversions and grab bar installations that boost safety for homeowners.  KVIA
  • Joe Uranga from El Paso is offering free shelter for nearly a dozen horses displaced by flooding in Ruidoso, including those from Ruidoso Downs Racetrack. He has space for about 30 horses plus a walker and ranch area for exercise and calming the animals.  KVIA

CRIME NEWS

  • Estefania Primera—36-year-old alleged Tren de Aragua gang member known as La Barbie—began her jury trial Friday at 8 a.m. at the Gateway Hotel in downtown El Paso, where she faces second-degree human trafficking charges that could cost her 2 to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.  KFOX14
  • Graciela Sahs, a 26-year-old from El Paso buying fireworks, was killed in a hit-and-run on July 3 in Sunland Park when a Ford Ranger struck her and another pedestrian at 10:30 p.m.—New Mexico State Police later arrested 61-year-old Vicente Vasquez on charges including homicide by vehicle and leaving the scene.  El Paso Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Several Borderland school districts will offer free school supplies for students during a series of back-to-school events. El Paso ISD will host its Fiesta from July 29 to 31 while IDEA Public Schools gives away backpacks today from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.—other districts including Anthony, Clint and LCPS will also distribute supplies on scheduled days.  KFOX14

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On July 8, a power outage at Marathon Refinery caused large plumes of black smoke and flames to burst from its smokestacks around 5:30 p.m., leaving El Paso residents demanding clearer communication— they want a community meeting, a 24/7 hotline and regular air quality updates to know how to stay safe.  El Paso Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michael Quinonez was sworn in as the new Santa Teresa Port of Entry director on July 10 at the War Eagles Air Museum in El Paso and took over customs and agriculture inspections from Director Hector Mancha, who passed the guidon (a symbol of authority) during the ceremony. Quinonez brings over 23 years of experience with U.S. Customs and Border Protection from roles including the Port of Douglas and the Tucson Field Office.  KTSM

  • Former pro golfer Greg Yellin, a Coronado and UTEP alum, will return as an assistant coach at UTEP after three years playing professionally—he aims to use his experience, which includes winning a Dakotas Tour event, to help college golfers improve in his hometown.  El Paso Times
