CRIME NEWS

  • A 33-year-old woman was arrested at the Bridge of the Americas on July 3 for trying to smuggle 12 guns and 28 magazines hidden in her 2025 Volkswagen Virtus—she now faces federal charges.  El Paso Times
  • New court records show that defense lawyers received about $745,000 for the federal case of the Walmart shooter in El Paso—part of roughly $1.3 million in total fees, while the shooter pleaded guilty to killing 23 people in a 2019 mass shooting.  El Paso Times
  • On Sunday, July 13, El Paso police responded to a traffic call on I-10 near Yarbrough Drive when 30-year-old Xavier Guadalupe Hernandez became combative and unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at Del Sol Medical Center—investigators from the police department and Texas Rangers are reviewing the incident.  El Paso Times
  • Bernardo Carrasco, who has multiple DWI convictions, was arrested Saturday afternoon in Horizon City near Horizon Middle School after a crash when officers detected signs of intoxication—he is now in custody and faces charges for DWI and collision causing vehicle damage with a bond of $61,500.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • El Paso’s Binational Independent Film Festival celebrates its 25th edition by returning to Segundo Barrio at the La Fe Culture and Technology Center at 721 S Ochoa St.—the event runs from July 17-20, screening independent films, documentaries and hosting live discussions while presenting Lifetime Achievement Awards to actor César Évora and filmmaker Allan Holzman. The festival, supported by communities on both sides of the border, aims to nurture creativity and spark dialogue through cinema.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso County released an RFP for a construction manager at risk to build a new Office of the Medical Examiner as part of its voter-approved Capital Improvement Bond Program that allocated $26.7 million for modern forensic services; a pre-proposal conference will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 3 at the County Purchasing Department (800 E. Overland Ave.) with proposals due by 2 p.m. on Sept. 11.  KTSM
  • The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission awarded a $290,072 grant to improve the Rio Grande River Park Trail in partnership with El Paso County—this grant, made through the 2025 Recreation Trails Grants Program, will fund repairs, added amenities, and intersection improvements as part of a county-wide, 70-mile trail effort announced by the Paso Del Norte Community Foundation on July 14.  KTSM
  • El Paso’s new HEART pilot program is using a coordinated team of over 30 agencies to help the homeless by reducing police enforcement and speeding up service delivery—planning a three-day outreach in late July that will give homeless veterans access to shelter, health care and support with provisions for pets. The initiative builds on recent partnerships among city, nonprofit and service groups working to improve rapid response for those in need.  El Paso Matters

  • 15-year-old Hailey Delgado from El Paso won the 105-pound division at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals in Fargo—she won all six bouts including a 7–0 decision over New York’s Gail Sullivan. She valued the support of Texas wrestlers and plans to compete in more tournaments before starting her sophomore year at Eastwood in the fall.  El Paso Times
