BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business owners along Montana Avenue and near Loop 375 say the ongoing Montana expansion project has hurt sales, with one shop reporting a drop from $3,000 to $300 a day after the access road was narrowed to one lane. TxDOT said the project, which began in April 2019 and will be completed by March or April 2027, is being coordinated with local businesses through meetings and flyer distribution — ensuring continued access during road work.  KTSM
  • Local welders and tradesmen attended a job-screening event on July 17 at Sun City Welding Academy in East El Paso to prequalify for 180 positions on a major industrial project near Orla — the event, organized by U.A. Local Union No. 412, continued on July 18.  KTSM

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Fort Bliss soldier Andrew James Williams pleaded guilty to murder for a 2023 bar shooting that killed James Nicholson Jr. and Alexa Retana and was sentenced to life in prison with parole in 30 years — his co-defendant now faces trial on Sept. 12.  El Paso Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Recent ICE raids and deportations in the U.S. have made migrants send less money to their families in Cadereyta de Montes, with remittance transfers dropping nearly 15 percent from last year. UTEP Professor Tom Fullerton warned that a proposed remittance tax may further hurt these low-income communities that rely on such support.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Clint ISD will start its new school year on Monday, July 21, with 10,500 students enrolled and over 1,600 teachers and staff preparing classes—ensuring a safe and welcoming environment across all campuses.  KTSM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city is holding a community meeting on Tuesday, July 22 at 6 p.m. at Marty Robbins Recreation Center (11620 Vista del Sol Drive) to gather input on the Vista del Sol Drive rebuild, which will include new road surfaces, ADA sidewalks, and updated street signs. El Paso ISD will start a new districtwide dress code in August that sets uniform colors of white, gray, and navy to simplify rules for students.  El Paso Matters
  • El Paso County Court of Commissioners is considering improvements for Ascarate Lake after a Department of Public Works study found issues with water loss, water quality, lake depth, and harmful algae — proposals include installing new water pumps, lake aerators, renovating the shoring, and planting trees as an alternative to dredging. County officials will hold additional public meetings to discuss these plans and may incorporate them into an existing bond project — further details will be shared at upcoming sessions.  KFOX14

HEALTH NEWS

  • An El Paso doctor was disciplined by the Texas Medical Board for giving controlled substances without proper checks, which led to multiple overdoses and required him to pass a jurisprudence exam and complete CME hours—another local doctor had her license temporarily suspended after allegations of negligence that led to two infant deaths.  KFOX14

  • El Paso Threat All Star Cheer launched its Cheerabilities program in 2024 to let athletes of all abilities join cheerleading and the team has grown to include ten athletes after several performances at local venues—coaches Amanda Gonzalez and Jacob Aguirre plan to have the team compete in the future.  KVIA
