  • El Paso filmmakers are eyeing a $1.6B state incentive package after lawmakers approved a program offering rebates up to 31% to help boost the film industry — local production companies plan to invest more in new projects.  El Paso Inc.

CRIME NEWS

  • El Paso police said an SUV hit and killed a woman in her 70s while she was crossing Alameda Avenue near Gibraltar Drive in South-Central El Paso at 9:22 a.m. on July 19th—detectives are searching for the driver.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local artist Kim Arellano launched a line of t-shirts, tote bags, stickers, posters and bookmarks after learning PBS was being defunded, with items available at La Nube's gift shop and on Instagram. She hopes her designs—rooted in cherished shows like Word World and Word Girl—will help support PBS programs.  KVIA
  • Chicano film legend Luis Valdez visited El Paso on July 18 to speak at the Plaza Classic Film Festival where he shared his experiences in creating La Bamba and working on Zoot Suit. The festival, now in its 18th year and running through July 27, continues to feature films that highlight local art and history.  El Paso Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • UA Local 412 and Sun City Welding Academy held evaluations for welders and pipe-fitters in El Paso to fill jobs that pay between $43 and $60 an hour and offer a generous per diem. The positions include combo welders and journeymen pipefitters at the MPLX Cryo-Gas Separation Plant — a step to boost the workforce as many skilled workers retire.  KVIA

  • Brian Contreras recalled his busy final semester at UTEP when he shook hands with local business leaders and excelled in class. Many El Paso graduates, despite their achievements, continue to face challenges in landing job offers.  El Paso Inc.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso city leaders said the new fiscal year 2026 budget would expand homestead exemptions for seniors and people with disabilities to lower tax bills. The plan in fact cuts taxes by only about $19 per household—officials will hold a public hearing on Aug. 12 and vote on the plan on Aug. 19, while the change could raise taxes by about $104 on an average home.  El Paso Matters
