- ➤ U.S. Customs and Border Protection arrested a 56-year-old man after seizing 132.4 grams of fentanyl hidden in his body cavity at the Bridge of the Americas on July 18 — and later stopped a 21-year-old woman for concealing 42 pounds of cocaine in her vehicle at Ysleta on July 20, while El Paso police today provided free VIN etching at Take 5 Oil Change to help prevent catalytic converter thefts. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Several El Paso-area school districts have set varied start dates for the 2025–26 school year, with Anthony ISD beginning on July 28, Gadsden ISD on July 29, and most districts including El Paso, Socorro, Canutillo, Fabens, and La Fe Preparatory opening on Aug. 4 while Harmony starts on Aug. 13. A new state law—signed by Gov. Abbott—bans non-instructional cell phones in K–12 classrooms beginning Aug. 4. El Paso Times
- ➤ El Paso’s Adair Margo was chosen for the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame and will be honored on Nov. 6 for her work in the arts and humanities. Clint ISD approved pay raises for about 1,500 employees starting this fall and Texas Tech Health El Paso will launch its first Ph.D. program in biomedical sciences in spring or fall 2026 — both moves respond to local community needs. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ El Paso City Council paused Texas Gas Service’s $41.1M rate hike for 90 days on July 21 to review its impact before a final decision is made—if approved, the proposal could raise the average bill by about $10–$14 a month as the city checks the potential profit and service consolidation. The decision will be reviewed by the Texas Railroad Commission after the city completes its review. El Paso Times
- ➤ Texas law only allows front windshield and driver side tint to allow 25% of light through and provides medical exemptions for those with health issues—drivers using darker tint risk fines up to $275 and failing vehicle inspections. Law enforcement advises checking tint certification stickers and using a tint meter before inspection to avoid delays. El Paso Times
- ➤ TxDOT announced that starting July 27, crews will close lanes on several routes— including I-10, Loop 375, and US-54— for construction, paving, and safety improvements that will extend into early August. The work is scheduled during both day and night hours to install new pavement, repair guardrails, and upgrade lighting. KFOX14
