  • At Ascarate Park's Healing Garden, family members, survivors and local residents gathered today to honor the 23 Walmart shooting victims from six years ago—volunteers set up the memorial, a musician performed and names were read—and the event marked the first anniversary of the shooter's life sentence.  KFOX14
  • Public art was lit in orange outside the Abraham Chavez Theatre (downtown) on Saturday, August 2 as part of Unite with Light (a remembrance event for the victims) of the Walmart mass shooting on August 3, 2019 near Cielo Vista Mall.  El Paso Times

  • La Nube STEAM Discovery Center celebrates its first birthday with a free event Saturday, Aug. 9 at 201 W. Main St. The celebration runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.—offering interactive exhibits, live performances and special giveaways while urging families to RSVP for guaranteed entry.  KTSM

  • A Fort Bliss Army sergeant named Briyana Taylor has turned plain barracks into stylish rooms using budget-friendly decor from Target—her TikTok posts have drawn millions of views and she has already helped update about 10 soldiers’ spaces, boosting morale on site.  El Paso Times
  • Today, the El Paso County Commissioners Court begins the fiscal year 2026 budget process by reviewing certified property values from the El Paso Central Appraisal District and tax rate options from the County tax assessor collector — public hearings and final votes will follow later in August, with the overall budget set by Sept. 15.  KTSM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nationwide measles cases have risen with 1,288 confirmed cases and three deaths in July, and most of the cases are in unvaccinated children under 19—pediatrician Dr. Caroline Weingart advises El Paso parents to check immunization records, practice good handwashing and sleep habits, and stock essential medicines for back-to-school protection.  El Paso Times

  • On Aug. 2, El Paso Locomotive FC set a club record with a 6 to 0 win over Las Vegas Lights at Southwest University Park (this victory marked the team’s largest margin and head coach Wilmer Cabrera’s biggest win).
