COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The El Paso County Community Services Department says County-operated cooling centers at Agua Dulce Community Center, Fabens Community Center, and Canutillo Community Center remain open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until August 15 to help people escape extreme heat—residents are advised to keep pets cool by offering water and shade.  KFOX14

CRIME NEWS

  • El Pasoans gathered at the Healing Garden at Ascarate Park on Aug. 3 to mark the 6th anniversary of the 2019 Walmart mass shooting that claimed 23 lives, with family members and officials sharing memories and paying tribute—honoring those lost.  El Paso Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ysleta Independent School District will begin offering free after-school supper meals at 14 campuses starting Aug. 11 at select high schools and Aug. 18 at six elementary schools to provide nutritious food for students staying after school for activities. Meals will be served Monday through Friday — at elementary schools from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. and on high school days beginning at 4 p.m.  KFOX14
  • El Paso area schools eased dress code rules to allow more student expression while banning unsafe items—district officials say relaxed policies stem from habits formed during COVID and high schools are facing more challenges. Nearby districts have also adjusted rules to maintain safe, positive learning environments.  KFOX14
  • ABC-7 is back this week with its Words of Wisdom segment that features Adair Margo, a well-known local leader who will be inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame for her work in arts and education. Margo, a third-generation El Pasoan who taught at UTEP and NMSU, urges students to go to school with gratitude—she says that kind acts can help make the new school year a success—adding hope and encouragement for everyone.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas DPS today reminded drivers to slow down and follow school zone laws as students begin the new school year. Officials said drivers must stop for school buses with flashing red signals or face fines up to $1,250 or a license suspension — a measure to keep families safe.  KVIA
  • Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to remove lawmakers who do not attend sessions, saying he will have them arrested and extradited, though experts say his plan faces legal hurdles and needs a court ruling plus a two-thirds House vote. Texas Speaker Dustin Burrows has ordered troopers to secure attendance while officials in Illinois and New York promise to protect the absent lawmakers (experts note that similar moves have failed in the past).  KFOX14
  • Approximately 3,800 people in Horizon City are without power as of 8:49 a.m. today—El Paso Electric said power should be restored by 11 a.m.  KVIA
