CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 68-year-old registered sex offender, Lorenzo Davila, was arrested on Aug. 3 near a relative’s house—he is accused of kidnapping and sexually abusing a woman who escaped after being taken on July 22 in the Horizon City area—and he remains in custody on a $220,000 bond. El Paso Times
- ➤ An El Paso man, 68-year-old Lorenzo Davila, was arrested on aggravated kidnapping with sexual abuse charges after abducting and assaulting a woman on July 23 and was booked on Sunday at 9:30 p.m. near a relative's residence in the 13000 block of Grand River when the victim flagged down help, with his bond later increased to $220,000. - ➤ El Paso will host WinterFest 2025, the city’s largest holiday celebration, which begins with the Scherr Legate Lights Parade on Saturday, Nov. 22. The city is accepting applications for food trucks, artisan vendors and performers—with parade submissions due by Sept. 12, Chalk the Block applications by Aug. 18, and Día de los Muertos entries by Aug. 7. - ➤ Texas will hold a tax-free weekend from August 8-10 that will let shoppers avoid the 6.25% sales tax on most shoes, clothes and school supplies under $100. The holiday will allow people to buy qualifying items in-store, online, by mail or any other way—make sure the items qualify since purchases of $100 or more are not included. KFOX14

- ➤ The El Paso City Council unanimously passed a resolution today opposing a proposed redistricting plan that would move Fort Bliss and the international airport out of the city—council members said the change could hurt local economic prospects and weaken El Paso's voice in Washington. The motion was approved during a special session convened by Governor Greg Abbott with city representatives like Josh Acevedo and Deanna Maldonado-Rocha supporting the measure. KVIA
- ➤ El Paso property owners will see their tax bills rise this fall from voter-approved bonds that fund county projects and UMC upgrades to new health clinics—UMC homeowners may pay about $72 more per year while county officials work on finalizing a new ceiling tax rate for upcoming budgets. KVIA
