CRIME NEWS

  • An active-duty Army soldier from El Paso was arrested on Aug. 6 and is accused of trying to send sensitive details about an M1A2 Abrams — the Army’s main battle tank — to someone he believed was a Russian intelligence officer in exchange for citizenship.  El Paso Times
  • An 18-year-old suspect, Ximena Garcia-Baca, was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after she used her car to hit a man's vehicle several times on March 14 near the 13000 block of Horizon Blvd+ she fled the scene before surrendering on August 1 when the bond was set at $75,000.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • The El Paso community is preparing for El Grito, a big celebration of Mexico's independence on Saturday, September 13, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. People will enjoy mariachi music from Universidad Autonoma in Ciudad Juarez + wrestling, live bands, food trucks, artisan stands, and a special light show on the mountain star in green, white, and red.  KFOX14
  • Western Playland celebrated 65 years of fun and family tradition today—growing from 6 rides and 7 employees in 1960 to 30 rides and over 100 workers after a relocation due to a land dispute. Longtime staff say the park has become a family for many in the Borderland.  KVIA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Texas shoppers begin the tax-free weekend today at 12:01 a.m. and can buy qualifying items such as clothing, backpacks, school supplies and select electronics under $100 without paying tax until midnight Sunday—non-qualifying items like computers still incur sales tax.  El Paso Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fabens High School started its first week back with new first female principal Roxana Amador who aims to improve attendance, student engagement and success. Superintendent Dr. Rogelio Segovia stressed the need for strong attendance after COVID + some students said their involvement in school activities helps them grow.  KVIA
  • Mesa Hills College Preparatory welcomed its first group of 12th-grade students as the school year began—IDEA Public Schools updated its cell phone rule to comply with new Texas law. Regional Director Yanira Aguilar explained that recent legislative changes and a new funding plan will support teacher salaries and address financial challenges.  KFOX14

  • Heavy rains have left many Borderland roads flooded and unsafe for driving. The El Paso Fire Department’s Battalion Chief Kris Menendez advised residents to stay in stalled vehicles—call 911 and carefully reverse to higher ground when possible.  KFOX14
