  • A group of 15 Girl Scouts completed a four-day home repair workshop this summer in El Paso offered by Rebuilding Together’s SheBuilds program—participants learned essential skills such as drywalling, plumbing, woodworking, and electricity and left with a tool bag for future repairs.  KVIA

CRIME NEWS

  • On August 7, deputies arrested 41-year-old Danny Joseph Navarro after he stole a cashier's wallet from a Circle K on the 12200 block of Eastlake and used the cards to attempt transactions—surveillance footage and license plate data led to his identification.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Austin High School marked 95 years in El Paso by preserving its Spanish architecture, original marble flooring, and the 106-foot tower that has seen scenes from the film Lolita— the school now offers dual credit courses, including in its Sandra Day O’Connor program, and many alumni have returned to teach there.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT announced that road closures, lane restrictions and detours will affect key highways such as I-10 and Loop 375 starting today and continuing through August 16 in support of maintenance and upgrades.   • On August 6, the EPCC board approved a 3% raise for about 2,400 employees in its 2025-26 budget starting Sept. 1 — while the City Council voted not to name an interim auditor after Edmundo Calderon retired, leaving City Manager Dionne Mack to handle audit duties — and EPCC trustees approved a 50-year ground-lease with Canutillo ISD for a new Northwest Early College high school project.  El Paso Matters
  • El Paso City Council voted on Tuesday not to name an interim chief internal auditor after Edmundo Calderon retired last Friday—administrative functions shifted to the city manager while officials review options for a permanent replacement.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • El Paso health officials warned that mosquitoes in the Upper Valley have tested positive for West Nile Virus during peak mosquito season—residents should use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and remove standing water to lower their risk. They added that those who are elderly or have underlying health conditions must take extra precautions to avoid serious illness.  El Paso Times
