  • Martin Armendariz Jr. and Noelle Coley have opened Pearl Divers Oyster Bar next door to the Tiki Room at 115 S. Durango St., serving fresh oysters from the East and West Coasts with dishes like oyster shots + Rockefeller oysters. The new restaurant draws visitors through social media and welcomes customers Tuesday-Sunday + plans to update its menu as it grows its coastal dining experience in our desert city.  El Paso Times

CRIME NEWS

  • Taylor Adam Lee, a Fort Bliss soldier from El Paso, is accused of trying to sell Abrams tank secrets to Russians after telling an undercover FBI agent his life was in shambles—he was arrested near the airport on August 6 and his hearing is set for 11 a.m. today.  KFOX14
  • Federal law enforcement arrested more than 130 people on immigration charges during the first week of August—these include a guide accused of smuggling migrants through storm drains and two men who attempted to break into a storm drain to facilitate smuggling.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Patrick Cathedral, a 107-year-old church, will begin a $6 million interior renovation on August 1 in an eight-month project that will restore columns, ceiling, and light fixtures while moving an unused confessional to create a shrine with a relic of St. Pedro de Jesus Maldonado. The renovation will keep the Sacred Heart statue, Stations of the Cross, and exterior unchanged.  El Paso Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Texas A&M AgriLife researchers and local farmers in El Paso are testing new methods to lower water salinity and help pecan orchards survive amid drought and climate change. They are also experimenting with cover crops and innovative techniques + new irrigation methods to improve soil health and secure the future of regional farming.  El Paso Matters

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso County commissioners are reviewing the proposed 2025-2026 budget today amid a nearly $18 million deficit—projected revenue of $393 million is set against spending of $410 million—and officials have implemented a 16-week hiring delay while some departments seek exemptions and consider a 48-cent tax rate increase per $100, with final adoption scheduled for September 15.  KFOX14
