- ➤ Texas A&M extension agent Orlando Flores explained that El Paso’s 17,000 acres of pecan orchards play a key role in the local economy as water shortages lead to more reliance on groundwater and push farmers to try water-saving crops — El Paso Water is expanding its desalination and sewage conversion projects to boost scarce water supplies. - ➤ Loretto Academy welcomed students this week after starting school on Aug. 11, and Athletics Director Oscar Nieto said a new weight room will be unveiled in December if they raise the needed funds. The academy is hosting its 24th annual Golf Tournament to raise money for the project — the event is open to the public. KVIA
- ➤ Texas Tech Health El Paso announced its first Ph.D. program in biomedical sciences—approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board—that will begin in 2026 with five or six students and grow to 30 to 35 students. The program will train researchers to solve local health challenges while linking medical, nursing, and dental schools and is backed by a $10 million donation from the Francis family. KFOX14

- ➤ Texas still bans recreational marijuana while allowing medical cannabis use under a law set to take effect on September 1—and lawmakers continue to debate rules for THC, THCA, and CBD products while local enforcement handles low-level possession through citation programs. - ➤ The National Science Foundation ended the UTEP-led Paso del Norte Defense and Aerospace Innovation Engine grant on Tuesday and withdrew the $15 million initial award, which had not been spent.
