  • El Paso consumer products company Helen of Troy named Scott Uzzell—former Nike and Coca-Cola executive and the firm's first Black CEO—as its new chief executive, effective Sept. 1. He will lead the company as it works to return to growth amid recent sales and stock price declines while its El Paso employees continue remote work until new Downtown offices open.  El Paso Times

CRIME NEWS

  • A judge awarded $45.6 million to the family of late DPS agent Anthony Salas, who died during a joint operation near Eagle Pass in 2022 when unsafe CBP practices led to his fatal accident & a seven-day bench trial found the agency liable.  KFOX14
  • El Paso officials warned residents about a scam in which fraudsters pose as Planning and Inspections Department staff to send emails that mention existing projects and demand a 'City Compensation Fee' with a falsified invoice—residents are urged to check email addresses and not respond.  KVIA
  • A Socorro man, Armando Bejarano, pleaded guilty on Aug. 7 to 24 felony charges—ranging from theft and drug offenses to evading arrest—that were linked to a crime spree from 2019 to 2024 and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Babak Tavakoli, a local muralist, began painting large murals in 2020 after he lost his job as a restaurant server. He uses spray paint to show his love for border culture and indigenous symbols that honor El Paso traditions.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Texas at El Paso is relaunching its university press after nearly 20 years of inactivity and will now operate as UTEP Press, which plans to release 8 new titles and republish classics during the 2025-26 academic year. The press will continue the Texas Western Press imprint, focusing on Southwest topics, and will use modern print-on-demand and ebook technology while awarding two $10,000 book stipends and two fellowship awards.  KFOX14
  • On August 14, 2025, Workforce Solutions Borderplex started NEWForce to use $2 million for 200 paid apprenticeships in high-demand fields like health, IT, and construction — manufacturing in downtown El Paso. Local employers will host these apprenticeships to lower training costs and fill job gaps.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso County will hold its fourth and final gun buyback event on August 16 at the county tax office at the Ascarate Annex on 301 Manny Martinez Drive at Ascarate Park—unwanted handguns, rifles, and ammunition will be exchanged for gift cards as the county winds down its program ahead of the Texas ban effective September 1.  El Paso Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • El Paso high school football will begin on Aug.-28 and -29 with 11 weeks of games as Class 4A-6A teams compete at local venues including SAC -1 and SAC -2. Key matchups include Bel Air vs - Eastlake at 6:30 p.m. on Aug.-28, with teams set to face off across the region throughout the season.  El Paso Times
