COMMUNITY NEWS

  • KTEP Public Media—an NPR station linked to UTEP in El Paso—launched an emergency fundraiser on Friday after federal cuts removed CPB funds and will resume today from 11 a.m. to midnight at its Cotton Memorial studios to raise $50,000 for licensing costs.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTEP announced plans to relaunch its university press after nearly 20 years. UTEP Press will publish eight books in print-on-demand, e-book, and audiobook format — and will award two $10,000 book stipends for new proposals on Southwest topics — to renew local academic publishing.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso Community College ranked near the bottom in WalletHub’s study when it placed 593 of 653 schools based on cost, education and career outcomes. The college charges tuition of $1,632 and reports that 88% of students receive financial aid while its overall graduation rate stood at 21%.  El Paso Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • El Paso’s Environmental Services Department offers residents free refurbished goods at five citizen collection stations — including a country warehouse at 3510 Confederate on the East Side—to help reduce landfill waste and promote recycling in the community.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city rescinded Stage 4 of its drought contingency plan and now uses Stage 3 severe water storage rules—effective Thursday, August. Officials said the measure will remain in place until further notice.  El Paso Inc.
  • ACLU of Texas, some groups, and 16 families are fighting a law that forces schools to show the Ten Commandments in every classroom—saying it breaks the Constitution. A hearing for a delay is set for later today at the U.S. Federal District Courthouse for West Texas and the law might not take effect on September 1 if the court agrees.  KFOX14

  • El Paso champion Stephanie Han—also a police officer and mom—is set to defend her WBA Lightweight World Championship title on Saturday, August 23 in Orlando. She won the belt with a first-round knockout and will face 24-year-old Paulina Angel in her first title defense.  KFOX14
