COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Ysleta del Sur Pueblo is mourning the loss of Cacique Jose Sierra Sr., whose death was announced on August 16 after he led the tribe since 2017 — local leaders closed the Speaking Rock Entertainment Center and canceled planned events to honor his legacy.  El Paso Times

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 12-year-old girl died after an off-road vehicle crash in Socorro on Sunday at 8:19 p.m. when a 2023 Polaris Razor, driven by a 36-year-old woman and carrying a 36-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl, rolled over near the intersection of Darrington Road and Vista Larga Trail—police said the investigation is ongoing with help from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.  KFOX14
  • The El Paso Fire Department received a call at 10:46 a.m. today for a mountain biker in need of help near Bluemoon and Mad Cow Trails in Northeast El Paso—Combined Search and Rescue is moving up the mountain to assess the patient with no injuries reported.  KVIA
  • A motorcycle and vehicle crashed on the 5100 block of N Mesa at 12:30 a.m. near the Alamo Drafthouse and one person was airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries—police and fire investigators are working the scene.  KFOX14

CRIME NEWS

  • On August 5th at 10 p.m., a man broke into the Metro by T-Mobile store in Mission Valley and took coins and a cellphone while witnesses described him as Hispanic, 6 ft tall in his mid-20s wearing a black mask, a light hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and shoes—Crime Stoppers is asking anyone with information to call 566-8477.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local author Zeke Peña, who grew up in El Paso, released his debut book Sundust on Aug. 5 which follows siblings exploring the desert and keeping family traditions alive—he is known for his vibrant art that brings local culture to life. He held several reading and drawing events at Falstaff Art Complex, La Nube, and Barnes & Noble while partnering with Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center to support the community.  El Paso Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Sen. John Cornyn reviewed a new ICE migrant detention facility in El Paso+ and described it as the largest center in the nation+ noting the facility is used to hold migrants.  El Paso Inc.
  • Mayor Renard Johnson said after six months in office that the city faces a tough budget with less revenue and 600 vacancies to fill — he is working hard to speed up permit processing for business growth. He added that he supports the deck plaza plan to connect neighborhoods with parks and bike trails for the future.  El Paso Matters
