ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Hundreds of residents in northeast El Paso were without water on Monday morning when a water main break struck the Mesquite Hills area and affected 500 to 1,000 customers — city crews are working to find the cause and restore service soon.  KFOX14

CRIME NEWS

  • El Paso police released body cam footage from July 13 that shows officers restraining 30-year-old Xavier Guadalupe Hernandez after he attempted to jump off I-10 east at Yarbrough — he became unresponsive and later died at the hospital as his autopsy ruled his death a homicide.  KFOX14
  • A wrongful death lawsuit was filed by the family of Jesus Sepúlveda against LaSalle Corrections after the migrant was fatally shot near a reservoir in Hudspeth County in 2022—trial begins today at 10:30 a.m. in El Paso federal court under U.S. Senior Judge David Briones.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso police released a bodycam video showing a struggle on I-10 on July 13 that ended with 30-year-old Xavier Guadalupe Hernandez being tasered and restrained before he was pronounced dead from asphyxia — his death was ruled a homicide with cocaine toxicity as a contributing factor and investigations by multiple units are ongoing.  El Paso Times

  • El Pasoan TV personality chef Aarón Sánchez has been named the grand marshal and will lead the Sun Bowl Parade on Thanksgiving Day at 10 a.m. on Montana Avenue—details were announced by the Sun Bowl Association on Aug. 15.  El Paso Times
  • Hal Marcus’ painting El Paso Gracias a Dios was moved from the Chamizal National Memorial to Casa Ford after local negotiations over its storage, and his friend Luke Lowenfield bought it on July 29—ensuring the artwork remains available for the community. Marcus and his daughter had explored other options before Lowenfield’s check provided a quick solution that kept a key piece of El Paso history on display.  El Paso Matters

ECONOMY NEWS

  • El Paso Electric will credit bills for Texas customers on the fuel charge line starting in September — with average refunds of $9.61 for September and October and $5.42 for November, and credits may vary by rate service. Customers should review their bills to see the adjustments when they arrive.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Most school districts in El Paso County improved their TEA accountability scores last school year, with El Paso ISD improving from a C to a B and Ysleta ISD reaching the county’s highest score of 89—Canutillo ISD dropped from a B to a C while San Elizario ISD, though slightly better, remained at a D rating. The ratings, which are based on standardized tests, graduation rates and college readiness, give parents a clear picture of school performance.  KVIA
