ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On February 11, investigators determined that a Sun Metro bus falling off a hydraulic lift punctured a CNG cylinder, igniting gas that caused an explosion which killed two and injured 11 while severely damaging a 2013 building valued at $28,002,847—investigation findings were finalized on May 13.  KVIA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • El Paso Water is working year-round to upgrade its stormwater systems and protect residents from floods during monsoon storms; its projects include the new Pico Norte Pond and dam improvements near the Franklin Mountains, funded by a revised fee schedule that meets rising costs. Residents are urged to heed storm warnings and avoid driving through floodwater to stay safe.  El Paso Matters

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the Texas Senate passed several bills addressing flood safety, THC regulations and property tax limits during Gov. Abbott’s second special session. Lawmakers also approved measures targeting disaster response—by setting new protocols for camps and law enforcement records—to enhance public safety and emergency preparedness.  El Paso Times
  • The El Paso County Commissioners Court voted on Monday, Aug 18 to raise the property tax rate for Fiscal Year 2026 by .032 cent per $100—from .426 to .458—to help fund essential services and cover costs from state mandates. The increase is expected to generate an extra $28 million to refill the county’s reserve fund and keep interest rates lower.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso city council approved its lowest property tax rate in a decade at about $0.76 per $100 of taxable property for the next fiscal year, but rising home values increased average tax bills by about $83. CFO Cortinas and Mayor Johnson said over $420 million in tax revenue will fund public safety — seniors and disabled residents can save nearly $342.  KFOX14

  • UTEP head coach Scotty Walden said he will choose the starting quarterback sometime this week after testing five players during fall camp—each given reps in scrimmages. Boise State transfer Malachi Nelson is among the front-runners, and the Miners will start their season on August 30 against Utah State.  KFOX14
