ECONOMY NEWS

  • City leaders in El Paso celebrated the lowest property tax rate in a decade—rising property values will lead to higher bills for many homeowners. The council approved a rate of 75.9 cents per $100 as the taxable value increased nearly 87% since 2015, rising from $38 billion to over $71 billion today.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six El Paso high schools made Texas' top 100 in U.S. News and World Report's 2025-26 rankings released on Aug. 19. They were ranked based on college readiness, test scores, graduation rates and academic performance of underserved groups — with Young Women's Leadership Academy at No. 40 among the leading schools.  El Paso Times
  • Anthony ISD installed silent panic alert buttons in every classroom ahead of state law requirements as the new school year begins, investing about $360,000 with $5,000 in state funds. The system sends alerts directly to a school resource officer and integrates cameras for added safety—measures that include locked exterior doors and fences at Anthony Elementary.  KFOX14
  • The Socorro ISD board unanimously approved James P. Vasquez’s employment contract as the new superintendent—he had been serving as interim superintendent in recent months.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Record heat killed 39 people in El Paso in 2024—many of whom were migrants, seniors, or hikers—and rising temperatures may lead to more deaths without stronger actions. Local officials and the Extreme Weather Task Force are planning measures to help residents as climate change drives more dangerous conditions.  El Paso Matters

  • UTEP’s Miner Development Program gives athletes a chance to build athletic, academic, social and spiritual skills in optional after-practice sessions as head coach Scotty Walden leads talks to help players manage college sports pressure — including mental health challenges from social media.   • Malachi Nelson secured the UTEP QB1 job and is now the starting quarterback—he will lead the team in upcoming games as fans look forward to his performance.  El Paso Times
  • Malachi Nelson, a transfer from Boise State and former five-star recruit, will start as UTEP’s quarterback in the opener against Utah State on Aug 30—he won the position after a five-way battle and last year’s starter Skyler Locklear will serve as backup.  El Paso Times
