COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, volunteers cleaned the streets by collecting tires, furniture, carpets, and litter during a neighborhood cleanup event in El Paso — led by City Representative Deanna Maldonado Rocha and Precinct 2 County Commissioner David Stout. The next cleanup is scheduled for October 4th.  KVIA

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A semi-trailer accident shut down I-10 East and West at the Fabens exit when crews saw a blaze of smoke and fire while traffic is being rerouted via Alameda Ave East and the O.T. Smith exit—officials are still investigating the cause and the driver's condition.  KFOX14

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On August 19, several new businesses opened at Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso—MANGO, Palenque Grill, and Min Ho Korean Dogs Boba Tea quickly attracted shoppers, while upcoming stores like Purificacion and PRIMARK will add more choices for local consumers. This mix of brands shows the mall’s growing appeal and broadens options for dining and shopping.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hal Marcus moved his 1993 painting El Paso Gracias a Dios from Chamizal National Memorial after federal guidelines required its removal. Friend Luke Lowenfield bought the painting and it now hangs in CasaFord on Montana Ave—providing a new home where local residents can connect with El Paso history.  El Paso Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTEP President Heather Wilson announced that the university will close the Liberal Arts building this semester as Texas Western Hall will be built and the Student Union will be partly rebuilt—these projects aim to update key campus spaces. The university will also launch a Mining Engineering program in fall 2027 and expand its Artificial Intelligence courses to boost research efforts.  El Paso Times
  • Western Technical College will launch its first annual golf tournament — Tee Up for Success — on Friday, August 29 at Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course in Northeast El Paso to raise funds for student scholarships with registration at 8:00 a.m. and a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., while iHeartMedia is the presenting sponsor and the Paso Del Norte Foundation will manage the funds as the event features 18 holes, food, drinks, music, raffles and prizes.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso Water reported a water outage in the Lower Valley—crews are working to repair a main break at Alameda and Carolina in the Cedar Grove and Hidden Valley neighborhoods. Service is expected to be restored within 2-3 hours and residents can fill containers at a water tanker near the Valle Bajo Community Center.  KFOX14

SPORTS NEWS

  • El Paso's Stephanie Han retained her WBA lightweight title with a unanimous decision win over Colombia's Paulina Angel on Aug 23rd at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando—she scored 98-91 on all three cards despite a first-round knockdown and a cut on her forehead in the fourth round. Han now holds an 11-0 record while Angel stands at 7-2-2.  El Paso Times
