CRIME NEWS

  • The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is asking the public to help find a theft suspect seen in the 13900 block of Horizon—he is a Hispanic male with arm tattoos who may be bald, wearing a black cutoff t-shirt, gray pants and gray shoes.  KFOX14
  • El Paso police arrested 18-year-old Las Cruces resident Elijah Gabriel Marquez Duran on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge for a shooting that injured a 41-year-old man near the intersection of Enchanted Springs Road and Willy Mier Street on August 14—he was booked at the county detention facility on a $100,000 bond on August 20.  KVIA

  • UTEP welcomed new and returning students this Fall with Miner Welcome. Texas Western Gold Rush on August 25 featured a live concert, giveaways, fireworks and special guests—Minerpalooza will begin on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. for games and live music while UTEP named Dr. Scott Kruse as the new dean for the College of Health and Sciences and the football team will take the field on Sept. 6.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A water main broke at Montana and Krag Street Saturday night, leaving residents with flooding and long delays while El Paso Water plans two projects over the next five years to fix the aging system—this break marks the second incident in the area this year and raised fears over emergency response times.  KFOX14
  • Peruvian journalist Ricardo Quintana Chavez, who sought asylum after death threats in his home country, reported harsh treatment at ICE detention on Fort Bliss after being moved from Florida’s Alligator Alcatraz—he said he lost 15 pounds and now fears long detention while his case draws government and human rights attention. This case highlights ongoing concerns over ICE's treatment of immigrants and delays in resolving immigration proceedings.  El Paso Matters
