ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 35-year-old Ecuadorian woman running from a Border Patrol agent was fatally struck by two vehicles on the César Chávez Border Highway near Chamizal National Memorial on Aug. 17 — investigators say one car left the scene while the other stayed at the crash site.  El Paso Times

CRIME NEWS

  • Family members question the mishandling at a Juárez crematorium where 386 decomposing bodies were found two months ago and only about 40 have been identified—Norma and her son fear that her late husband Conrado may have been desecrated as authorities continue investigations and make arrests over the facility's illegal practices.  El Paso Matters
  • El Paso Police are looking for 69-year-old George Ramsey—an endangered missing person with an intellectual disability—who was last seen on the 2800 block of Brady Place near Eastwood Middle School wearing a white t-shirt, black shorts, knee-high socks, and black shoes, and anyone with information should call 915-212-4072.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On July 30, 2025, Hunt School of Dental Medicine honored first-generation students Sujey Lucero and Melanie Mendiola-Martinez at a luncheon hosted by Texas Tech Health El Paso by awarding Lucero the McCabe-Whitehill Dental Scholarship and granting Mendiola-Martinez the first-ever full-ride Dr. H.V. Whitehill III Dental Scholarship—both intended to help them serve El Paso’s community. The scholarships, donated by Deborah Whitehill, aim to ease financial barriers and encourage the scholars to practice in our local area after graduation.  El Paso Matters
  • The UT System Board of Regents approved replacing faculty senates with advisory groups effective Sept 1 under SB 37—raising concerns among faculty about losing a traditional role in shared governance. Campus leaders at schools like EPCC and Texas Tech Health El Paso are planning changes to meet the new law's requirements.  El Paso Matters

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas House approved a bill on Monday that cut the limit on city and county property tax revenue increases from 3.5% to 1% —exempting public safety costs—. Lawmakers removed size restrictions so the measure now applies to every locality —forcing officials to adjust budgets—.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso law enforcement officials met at the FBI field office Tuesday morning to warn that even prank threats against schools and public spaces will be prosecuted—FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and other agencies explained that adults face felony charges and juveniles may receive detention or probation if they post such threats on social media.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Texas Tech Health El Paso and the Opportunity Center will expand mental health outreach for homeless residents using a $280,000 Reach Resilience grant — the funding will hire outreach specialists and a patient navigator to connect patients like Anthony Lerma with psychiatric care and support. The program is set to improve access to needed services for those in crisis.  El Paso Matters
