- ➤ Federal authorities arrested four individuals in El Paso on Aug. 30 for allegedly smuggling children from Mexico and sedating them with THC gummies to keep the minors quiet during illegal border crossings+ the suspects used fraudulent documents including their own children’s birth certificates to facilitate the operation. - ➤ Mexican authorities extradited 44-year-old fugitive Kasey S. — wanted for drug smuggling and organized crime — to U.S. law enforcement at a Downtown El Paso border crossing on Saturday. KFOX14
- ➤ Police identified David Carmine O’Conner as the 52-year-old killed in a hit-and-run near Pershing Drive and Leeds Avenue yesterday at about 1:38 a.m. on his electric-assisted bicycle — investigators say the suspect’s gray/silver Kia did not stop and ask anyone with information to come forward. - ➤ UTEP increased its endowment set aside for student emergencies with a donation from El Paso Electric on Thursday—boosting funds that will cover unexpected needs for students. This boost will help prepare UTEP for challenging situations. El Paso Inc.

- ➤ El Paso County is launching a $1.4 million study to increase commercial traffic at the underused Tornillo-Guadalupe International Bridge, which was built to boost regional trade but has seen low use. The study will map cargo flows and address infrastructure challenges on both sides of the border — aiming to attract more industry by November 2026. El Paso Matters
- ➤ TX DOT’s Jennifer Wright provided an update on the I-10 Widening West Project in northwest El Paso—traffic alerts list alternate lane closures and scheduled work from Monday, September 8 to Saturday, September 13 at segments including North and South Desert and the corridor between Anthony and Nashua. Crews will work on tasks such as electrical upgrades, dirt work, concrete placement, and material removal as the project continues. KVIA

- ➤ Local health experts confirmed that kissing bugs are present in El Paso County and can carry a parasite that causes Chagas disease in humans and pets — early symptoms like fever, fatigue, and swelling can be vague but treatment is available if complications develop. - ➤ El Paso Public Health confirmed the first neuroinvasive West Nile virus case this year in an 80-year-old man from ZIP code 79932 who is hospitalized with severe nerve symptoms — mosquitoes in ZIP codes 79932 and 79936 have also tested positive for the virus. KFOX14
- ➤ Dr. Colby Rich from Texas Tech Health El Paso said the carnivore diet, which is mostly meat, may help with weight loss but can lead to vitamin and fiber deficiencies and higher LDL levels—he advised choosing a balanced Mediterranean diet instead. KFOX14
