  • El Paso County Parks & Recreation launched Dog Swim Season at Ascarate Pool with a Canine Fiesta held last Saturday. Pup Swim days will run on Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. through September 27, charging $2 per dog while owners swim free — participants must show proof of current vaccinations and remain with their pets at all times.  KFOX14
  • On Wednesday, SHEBuilds hosted a free event in El Paso where women learned to install ceramic tiles at a warehouse and then practiced the skills at a project home—Marathon Petroleum Corporation and Rebuilding Together organized the workshop to boost practical home improvement skills.  KFOX14
  • Today, El Paso hosts several 9/11 commemorations—ceremonies at Fire Station 18, the EPCC Veterans Resource Center, and a stair climb at Sun Bowl Stadium—while Patriot Day volunteers gather at Fort Bliss National Cemetery until 1 p.m.; meanwhile, the unbeaten Miners face No. 24 UCLA at 6 p.m. at Memorial Gym and the free Kermés de los Vecinos event with crafts, music and food is set for Sept. 13 at Cleveland Square.  El Paso Matters
  • Girl Scouts in El Paso will launch Exploremores—a rocky road ice cream inspired sandwich cookie with flavors of chocolate, marshmallow and toasted almond crème for the 2026 season. The cookie season starts mid-January and lasts six weeks as sales fund local troop activities.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fort Bliss once housed an internment camp for enemy aliens during World War II that began taking in mainly men in early 1942 and closed in November — records show some wives and children joined later. The camp detained Japanese, German, and Italian internees and is confirmed by the Texas Historical Commission and the National Japanese American Historical Society.  El Paso Matters

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McDonald's launches its I Love to Read Program to help young El Paso students read & earn free treats. The program partners with Clint, Fabens, and Canutillo Independent School Districts and will reward K-3 students who read one book per week from September 15 through December 7 with certificates, a free book, and a chance to win prizes while each school gets $1,000.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney Daniela Labinoti explained that pedestrians and cyclists have legal protections on the road similar to motorists. She noted that drivers must stay alert and under Texas law a driver 51% at fault cannot help recover damages—each case depends on its specific facts.  KFOX14
  • A federal judge ruled to end removal proceedings for DACA recipient Catalina Xochitl Santiago after she was detained near the airport on August 3—local advocates celebrated the decision but she remains in ICE custody as prosecutors have 30 days to appeal. Her case continues to spark calls for her immediate release.  KFOX14
