  • Albertsons, ABC-7, and El Pasoans Fighting Hunger teamed up for the Together in tough times campaign to help local families pay for groceries — the effort will give over $5,000 in gift cards to 100 customers through September 30 as part of nationwide Hunger Action month.  KVIA
  • El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank has named Army veteran and businessman Kris Yagel as interim CEO after Susan Goodell led the group since 2018—he began working at the food bank in March and the board is now looking for a permanent leader.  KVIA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ollie's Bargain Outlet will open today in East El Paso at the old Big Lots location off George Dieter Dr—next to Goodwill. The discount store expects to create between 50 and 60 jobs as it offers brand-name closeouts at up to 70% off.  KFOX14
  • Circle K is giving away free medium hot or iced coffee on National Coffee Day Monday, Sept 29 — El Paso customers can redeem the offer through the Circle K app with no purchase needed.  KFOX14
  • A new Circle K fuel canopy will be built at 9487 Dyer St.—near the corner of Dyer Street and Sanders Avenue in Northeast El Paso, and construction is expected to begin soon as the lot has been cleared. Core States Group of Duluth is listed as the applicant for the $341,873 project adjacent to several well-known stores.  El Paso Times
  • Basilico, an Italian restaurant known for its roots in Juárez, opened at 12900 Eastlake Blvd., Suite A106-10 on El Paso’s Eastside and offers fine dining & budget-friendly prices that quickly attract business professionals and families.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Patrick Cathedral in downtown El Paso will start a $6 million renovation in the next year to fix structural and cosmetic issues that have built up over its 107-year history—services will move to Holy Family Church and a school gym during the six-month closure as a capital campaign funds the project.  KFOX14
  • El Paso’s La Nube STEAM Discovery Center was named the only US finalist for the 2025 Children in Museums Award—an honor for innovative children’s museum programming. Since opening in 2024, the museum has welcomed over 300,000 visitors and now offers four floors of hands-on bilingual exhibits.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso filmmaker Laura Varela will screen her military documentary American Sons on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Mexican American Cultural Center with a Q&A after the free show—she uses footage from Marine J.V. Villareal, who died in 2010, to highlight his unit's bond and aims for an Oscar nomination while the film will air on PBS on Jan. 12.  KFOX14

  • California governor Gavin Newsom signed a law banning federal agents from wearing masks during immigration operations on Sept. 20—co-sponsored by El Paso’s U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar. Legal experts said the law may face enforcement challenges due to state-federal limits—other states are reviewing similar proposals.  El Paso Times
  • El Paso voters will choose leaders in many races for 2026 as early voting starts Feb. 17 and the primary is set for March 3—races include contests for U.S. Senate, governor, and local offices with voters needing to register by Feb. 2.  El Paso Times

  • From Sept. 22 to 27, El Paso high school volleyball teams played a series of competitive matches with schools like Eastlake, San Elizario, and Ysleta showcasing strong performances. Felix F. Chavez reported key statistics in kills, digs, and assists that marked the week’s games — detailed scores reflected the intensity of each contest.  El Paso Times
