CULTURE NEWS

  • El Paso promoter J and K Present will launch the 'Detour' concert series on Oct. 5 at Lincoln Park from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.—the event will transform iconic landmarks like the area under the Spaghetti Bowl into open-air music venues featuring Disclosure, Chanel Tres, local artists and live mural painting by Mystic Desert Studio.  KFOX14
  • KFOX14/KDBC have been nominated for the 2025 Lone Star Emmy Awards — Robert Holguin is recognized for his 'Portrait of Community' and 'Deadly Terrain-Migrant Deaths' reports while photographer Jonathan Gonzales and former anchor Vania Castillo are honored for 'Plaza Raza' and 'Still Here: Holding the Line.'  KFOX14
  • A new film titled One Battle After Another opened in theaters on Friday and featured local landmarks and El Paso talent. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio del Toro, and Sean Penn—actors whose work is fueling Oscar buzz.  KFOX14

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Leaders in Doña Ana County approved an incentive deal on Sept. 19 for Project Jupiter, a $165 billion data center campus led by Oracle and OpenAI that created 2,500 construction jobs and will add 750 full-time positions once built. The project promises a separate power system using natural gas turbines and lower water use compared to other data centers — a plan that has raised both hope and concern in the border region.  El Paso Matters

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Animal Services opened the Westside Adoption Center at 5625 Confetti Drive with a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m.—the center has new living spaces, kennels and a walking trail and will open from noon to 6 p.m. daily. EPCC and UTEP won an NIH grant of 485,000 dollars to study genes and help doctors, and the 12500 seat Sunset Amphitheater will break ground on Nov. 19 under a plan by both the public and private sectors.  El Paso Matters
  • El Paso Zoo Director Joe Montisano was placed on temporary administrative leave earlier this week — city officials declined to comment on the reason and noted he cannot access his work email or cellphone until he returns. The zoo is addressing controversies including a wrongful termination lawsuit and accreditation issues as it continues facility upgrades and fundraising efforts.  KFOX14
  • The Texas Department of Agriculture launched a New World screwworm trapping plan to protect livestock and rural communities in the El Paso area—traps will be set in high-risk border zones and key livestock and port locations. Samples from the traps are to be sent for lab testing to monitor the pest before it harms agriculture.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Power of Pink project kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month yesterday by honoring 46 breast cancer survivors with a glamour treatment—photographs of the survivors will be displayed at community facilities throughout October to foster empowerment and connection among participants.  KFOX14

SPORTS NEWS

  • El Paso Rhinos lost two games to the Dallas Brahmas but coach Sermon says the team is practicing every day except Monday to build strength for a push toward the Frazier Cup. The squad blends local talent like Andre, who balances high school and early morning practice, with experienced players for their next home game on Oct. 17—a key three-game series.  KFOX14
  • A $1.2 million project to install energy-efficient LED lighting at the all-time fields at El Paso County Sportspark is underway with ball track lighting to boost play visibility and reduce light pollution—completion is expected by December.  KFOX14
  • UTEP football will face Louisiana Tech today in their Conference USA opener as the Miners, with a 1-3 record, try to reverse a recent losing streak and bring back strong tackling after a shaky performance against Louisiana-Monroe. The team, hit by injuries and missing players like top receiver Kenny Odom, will lean on quarterback Malachi Nelson, tailback Hahsean Wilson & cornerback Neil Campbell to spark their offense and tighten their defense.  El Paso Times
