COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On El Paso Giving Day, the Humane Society of El Paso ran a 24-hour kennel challenge when board president Anton Conlon lived in the shelter like a resident dog—he entered the kennel at 3 p.m. Wednesday to help raise $50,000 for shelter animals and medical care until the goal was met.  KVIA
  • The Amigo Airshow will take place this weekend at Biggs Army Airfield on Fort Bliss. The event features moto-cross athletes, the Fort Bliss Band, a steam exhibit, and air demonstrations by the US Air Force Viper F-16 Demo Team and the Patriots Jet Team — organizers also introduced a new water policy to ease hydration concerns.  KFOX14
  • Marathon Petroleum awarded $75,000 in matching funds to 10 local nonprofits supporting environmental sustainability and hunger relief on El Paso Giving Day—funds that will help boost community services.  El Paso Inc.
  • Today, the El Paso Center for Diabetes unveiled a plaque honoring the de Wetter Family Foundation’s donation on El Paso Giving Day—highlighting the foundation's support for the center’s programs. The center offers diabetes screenings and support to help residents live healthier lives.  KVIA

CRIME NEWS

  • The New Mexico Health Care Authority is investigating a Las Cruces wellness facility after a woman named Margarita Gonzalez allegedly impersonated a nurse by using license numbers from Texas nurses—her case is now with the El Paso County District Attorney's Office.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • El Paso is gearing up for Halloween and Día de los Muertos events with free family carnivals, parades and cultural festivities on dates including Oct. 25, Oct. 30-31 and Nov. 1. The events offer trick-or-treating, costume contests and traditional displays to celebrate local heritage — giving residents diverse ways to honor the season.  El Paso Matters
  • Local Spirit stores are featuring Halloween costumes inspired by movies such as Wicked for Good, Fantastic Four, and KPop Demon Hunters—options available in both adult and kids sizes with prices from about $50 to $80. Shoppers can choose themed outfits and accessories that add a special movie-like magic to their celebrations.  El Paso Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City-owned ports of entry, including Ysleta-Zaragoza and Stanton, are set for improvements after the City Council approved a $5 million feasibility study at Zaragoza Bridge to add a lane for commercial vehicles and modernize trade systems. Plans include building a new plaza with a pedestrian pick-up & drop-off area, beautifying intersections, and upgrading toll systems to ease future plan changes.  KVIA
  • The University of Texas at El Paso was awarded a $500,000 grant by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Thursday to help boost cybersecurity at nuclear power plants. The project— a joint effort with the University of Illinois Urbana—Champaign— will use artificial intelligence to improve digital defenses and offer students practical research experience.  KFOX14

HEALTH NEWS

  • Carlos donated his kidney to his mother, Ana Celia Figueroa — a retired teacher who battled cancer and kidney failure from Goodpasture syndrome. The transplant, delayed by a stage-zero breast cancer diagnosis and following two years of treatment, took place this summer at Las Palmas Medical Center.  KFOX14

  • El Paso boxer Nayeli 'La Bikina' Rodriguez won her recent fight at Southwest University Stadium amid slippery, rain-cooled conditions—she faced a 10-minute stoppage that forced her to adjust her game plan and credited her father-coach Joe Rodriguez for his guidance as she defeated a seasoned opponent.  KFOX14
  • Dominic Barry won his fight in heavy rain at Southwest University Stadium during the Bouts at the Ballpark event, where only four bouts took place because the weather forced an early stop. Barry's opponent quit before the second round—adding to his growing success in front of his hometown crowd.  KFOX14
