BUSINESS NEWS

  • A former Big Lots store at 7025 North Mesa St. in West El Paso will be converted into a Chuze Fitness center as part of the company's plan to expand its presence locally. More details on gym features and an opening date are expected to be announced soon—watch for updates.  El Paso Times
  • Tommy's Korean Express, run by Chef Tommy Kwang and Sung Song of Grove Brunch Cafe, now offers Korean comfort food at its new West Side location at 7722 Paseo del Norte, Suite A2—serving build-your-own Bibimbap bowls, ramen, and Korean pancakes under $10 for quick, healthy meals.  El Paso Times
  • Panera Bread will open its third location on the East Side today at 6 a.m. at 12304 Eastlake Blvd—where guests can join a bread-breaking ceremony and the first 100 customers will receive free 'You Pick Two' meals for a year. The restaurant will offer mobile pickup, delivery, drive-thru, and catering services, operate 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, and donate 30% of net event sales to local nonprofits through Jan 23.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • El Paso is embracing fall with a week of free cultural events, including a dog-friendly Día de los Doggies celebration from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology and a Fall Festival at Ascarate Park from 6 to 9 p.m. with live music and activities. Additional events include a Community Ofrendas Exhibition at the MACC from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, a workshop on Mesoamerican traditions at the El Paso Museum of History on Oct 25—26, and theater and film events that showcase local heritage.  El Paso Matters
  • This Saturday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., Concordia Heritage Association will host a Dia de los Muertos fundraiser at Concordia Cemetery in El Paso+ families will learn about the ofrenda tradition while enjoying vendors, food trucks and live music, with proceeds supporting the historic site.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • San Elizario High School Eagle band earned a Division 1 superior rating last Saturday that advanced them to the UIL Area Marching Competition in Abilene on Oct. 25. This is the first time in 10 years the band will compete as they prepare to showcase their skills.  KFOX14

HEALTH NEWS

  • Programa Compañeros has provided harm reduction services in Ciudad Juárez for nearly 40 years—workers say that increased border militarization and intensified security measures are now making it harder to reach vulnerable drug users.  El Paso Times
  • ProAction Emergency Services Institute in El Paso received a $10K grant from the Freeport Foundation on Wednesday to improve its first responder training programs — a check presentation was held at 11 a.m. at its headquarters at 1400 George Dieter Dr, Ste. 200 in East El Paso.  KFOX14
  • El Paso woman Esther Labib-Kiyarash is using her personal experience with young-onset Parkinson’s to support Proposition 14, a measure that will put $3 billion toward research on Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and dementia & encourage better treatment options. The ballot initiative will expand funding for early detection and partnerships among research institutions and hospitals.  KVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • UTEP Miners ended their four-game losing streak with a win over Sam Houston and introduced a new touchdown celebration using a pickaxe to smash a rock—head coach Scotty Walden said the idea came from a photoshoot with recruits. They will face Kennesaw State next Tuesday in a road game as the team builds new momentum.  KFOX14
  • The El Paso Locomotive will play San Antonio on Saturday, October 25 as they look to secure a home playoff game and potentially the fourth seed if Phoenix does not win or draw. Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera said the team will treat every match like a playoff—each result is key for their final standing.  KFOX14
