COMMUNITY NEWS

  • El Paso's Star on the Mountain is lit green this week as part of Operation Green Light to honor veterans' sacrifice and service—an effort that shows local support for those who served. The star will remain green from November 4th until Veterans Day on November 11th.  KFOX14

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Burger, a new restaurant opened by Anthony Ortiz and Ana Trevizo, now serves smash burgers near San Jacinto Plaza and at 209 E. Mills St. The eatery uses quality ingredients—like Maldon salt and beef tallow for crispy fries—and sees a busy lunch rush between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.  El Paso Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State conservators Andrew Kim & Michael Hinojosa overseeing Socorro ISD said they will leave next spring if the district meets its final exit goal and completes its budget for the next school year; the district has fixed three of four issues and must now boost community service and secure funds as shown by a tax vote on November 4.  El Paso Matters
  • Early voting results from Tuesday showed over 7,000 Socorro ISD voters narrowly approved Proposition A with 50.6 percent, a measure that would move 12 cents from debt repayment to operations and generate up to $49.2 million for school improvements — only 55 Tornillo ISD voters cast ballots and 58 percent rejected their similar proposal aimed at funding employee raises.  El Paso Matters

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the El Paso City Council approved a $3.17 million purchase of downtown properties—311 Overland Ave., 315 W. Overland Ave., and part of Block 25 along West San Antonio Ave—to expand the convention center. Funding will come from the hotel occupancy tax and the plan is expected to boost tourism and create local jobs.  KFOX14
  • Texas Land Commissioner and Veterans Land Board Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham is asking community members to send at least 100 birthday cards so Air Force veteran Gabriel Malafronte will celebrate his 100th birthday on Nov. 10 at the Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home — the request is part of the VLB’s 100 for 100 program honoring veterans.  KFOX14
  • Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation are holding a press conference at Franklin Mountains State Park today to announce Phase 1 of the Wyler Aerial Tramway project, funded by $27 million secured by local lawmakers. The project will expand parking and accessible facilities while a private campaign will support a future tram system and visitor center—restoring a landmark for El Paso residents and visitors.  KFOX14

HEALTH NEWS

  • UMC introduced the region’s first ECMO program that saved Nathaniel Williams’ life after he suffered severe injuries in a head-on crash in early February—his doctors used the machine when standard ventilation was not enough. Since then, UMC has treated 24 patients and is adding a specialized ECMO ambulance to help more critically injured patients transfer quickly.  El Paso Matters

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mary Moses Amaniyo scored 16 points and grabbed a record-breaking 22 rebounds as the UTEP Miners beat Prairie View A&M Panthers 84-60 on Monday — giving the team a 1-0 start while Prairie View fell to 0-1. UTEP will host Norfolk State Saturday at 7 p.m.  KFOX14
  • The UTEP Miners won 98-56 against the UT Permian Basin Falcons at the Don Haskins Center on Wednesday, led by Kaseem Watson's 18 points and a defense that forced 20 turnovers. The team will face Western New Mexico on Friday (four Miners reached double figures, including sophomore guard KJ Thomas with seven assists).  KFOX14
  • El Paso boxers headline a boxing event at Inn of the Mountain Gods on Saturday as Jorge 'El Jaguar' Tovar will fight Eric Moon in a super middleweight bout while Jesus Ariel Moreno Arias, known as Apache, faces Roberto Pucheta from Mexico City in a six-round super bantamweight match. Doors open at 6 p.m. with fights beginning at 7:30 p.m.—tickets cost between $35 and $75, with the highest price offering table seating, complimentary popcorn and a $15 drink voucher.  KFOX14
