COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chick-fil-A restaurants in El Paso will host a Military Appreciation Night on November 11 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.—offering free entrées like chicken sandwiches, spicy chicken sandwiches, or 8-count nuggets to active-duty and retired military members and their families with a valid military ID required.  KFOX14
  • Today, several Veterans Day parades honor veterans in El Paso—starting with the downtown event at 10 a.m. from Myrtle Avenue and North Campbell Street and including parades in Clint at 11 a.m. and San Elizario at 9 a.m. Meanwhile, Socorro will hold its first parade on Nov. 9 and Horizon City hosts a Veterans Expo today from noon to 4 p.m. with a ceremony scheduled for Nov. 11 at Old Glory Memorial.  El Paso Times
  • Today, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers El Paso hosts its annual 5K walk at Ralph T. Cloud Park starting at 9:30 a.m. The walk brings survivors and families together to raise funds and awareness about drunk driving as registration begins at 8 a.m. and fees are $25 for adults and $20 for kids—funds will stay in El Paso for support programs.  KFOX14
  • El Paso Matters got a $750,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation as part of a $6 million push to boost border news by supporting bilingual reporting and journalist safety. The funding—awarded to eight groups including three in El Paso—shows a clear effort to improve local news and combat misinformation.  El Paso Matters

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lincoln Park businesses are uniting to host monthly art markets, concerts, and open mic nights that bring new visitors to the area and boost local art and food options. The owners plan to launch Kickback Fridays and new restaurant openings — moves meant to increase foot traffic and strengthen neighborhood ties.  El Paso Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Recording Academy's Texas Chapter visited El Paso Friday, marking a milestone for the local music scene. A press conference announced an invitation-only mixer called In The Mix: El Paso that will take place Monday to connect local artists with top industry figures (including Teresa LaBarbera, Gina Chavez, Gene Moore, and Kitt Wakeley).  KFOX14
  • Armando Eleazar, age 32, from El Paso who grew up in Ciudad Juárez has performed with top stars such as Karol G at the MTV Video Music Awards and with Bad Bunny on Saturday Night Live — he studied at UTEP, trained in Los Angeles, and will pursue a musical or Broadway role as his next project.  KVIA
  • Adair Margo was inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame Thursday night at Texas Woman's University — she earned recognition for over 40 years of leadership in the arts and humanities, including her work preserving Borderland artist Tom Lea's legacy.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After voters rejected a tax proposal Tuesday that would have generated $49.2 million for Socorro ISD, the board approved a new health plan that raises premiums by $45 to $650 a month—forcing employees to adjust their budgets. The plan takes effect in January, and the district will notify staff during open enrollment from Nov. 10 to Dec. 6—adding strain amid ongoing financial challenges.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso Water announced $14 million to start a new Surface Water Augmentation Project at the Upper Valley Water Treatment Plant in northwest El Paso—this project will one day treat 20 million gallons per day and help reduce groundwater pumping for a more sustainable supply.  KVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • FC Juárez goalkeeper Benny Diaz spoke about his club's chances in the postseason — he also explained how living in the Borderland fills him with pride as the team prepares for upcoming matches.  El Paso Times
  • UTEP Miners men's basketball beat Western New Mexico 107-70 as five players scored in double figures and the team forced 22 turnovers with eight blocks to move to 2-0. The Miners will face Loyola Marymount Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Don Haskins Center — setting up their first Division I test.  El Paso Times
  • Today, the UTEP Miners with a 2-6 record play the 5-3 Jacksonville State Gamecocks in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, with the game set to feature top rusher Cam Cook against UTEP linebacker Micah Davey. UTEP’s offense and defense led by quarterback Skyler Locklear and linebacker Jayden Wilson will try to win — Jacksonville State, coached by Charles Kelly, plans to use a strong running game — in a contest expected to be close.  El Paso Times
