COMMUNITY NEWS

  • El Paso Community College's Valle Verde campus and El Pasoans Fighting Hunger hosted a grocery pickup event today where dozens of students, staff, and faculty received free food including fresh vegetables and dry items. School officials said the event started early at 6 a.m.—a change made as people lined up before the planned 9 a.m. start.  KVIA
  • Operation H.O.P.E. and TNA Wrestling are partnering for charity events this holiday season in El Paso; they will hold a Thanksgiving Food Giveaway on Nov. 22 at 10 a.m. at the El Paso County Coliseum and a toy drive from Dec. 5–7 with a final presentation on Dec. 8 at 11 a.m.—local TNA stars will join the events to support those facing hardships in the area.  KFOX14

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Oscar Leeser's Hyundai of East El Paso held its grand opening Wednesday night at its new dealership at 1571 Joe Battle Boulevard + a ribbon cutting marked the event. The celebration featured a DJ + drinks + snacks and is expected to boost local jobs and economic development.  KVIA
  • A provision in the federal spending bill is making some El Paso hemp business owners worried because it bans products with over 0.4 milligrams THC—this rule could force them into bankruptcy. Vista CBD owner Cristinada Costa said her store might face closure if the rule is not changed before it takes effect.  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • Vanessa Guzman, a Mexican actress living in El Paso, will hold a news conference on Monday to address an undisclosed incident at her home—she confirmed that neither she nor her son was attacked as investigators continue reviewing the matter.  KVIA
  • U.S. Catholic bishops voted 206-4 with one abstention Tuesday to advance the beatification of Father Richard Thomas, a Jesuit priest who served El Paso's poor and fed hundreds at a Ciudad Juárez dump on Dec. 25. Thomas, who died in 2006, will now have his cause further reviewed by the Vatican's Dicastery for the Causes of Saints—local church leaders honor his lifelong service.  KFOX14
  • Las Artistas, El Paso’s longest-running juried art show, will take place at Epic Railyard Event Center on Nov. 15 and 16 with a VIP option offering early entry, complimentary mimosas and tote bags + general admission available for $10 and free entry for children. Mexican singer Yolanda del Rio will perform at Plaza Theatre at 8 p.m. on Saturday with ticket prices ranging from $44 to $165.  El Paso Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Canutillo Independent School District held a groundbreaking ceremony today for Alderete Middle School in a $327 million project that is part of a bond to build four new campuses and renovate six existing ones + officials from Canutillo High School marked the start by using hard hats and shovels.  KVIA
  • El Paso and Canutillo school boards will interview superintendent candidates next week—EPISD on Nov. 17-18 and Canutillo on Nov. 17, 19, and 20—with finalists named in early December and final hiring set for Jan. 5. The process will replace outgoing leaders as the districts work to address declining enrollment and aging infrastructure.  El Paso Matters

HEALTH NEWS

  • El Paso is facing a rise in whooping cough cases as health officials report 20 cases by September—up from 3 cases last year—and they blame vaccine hesitancy for the increase. The city is urging families to get the TDAP shot, with vaccines now available at local clinics to help protect infants and vulnerable people.  KFOX14

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers began construction on the 200-acre Sky Park industrial park on El Paso airport land, marking the second such project and the first in over 40 years after a two-year delay for better financing rates. The project will be built in four phases at a cost of up to $400 million & is expected to boost revenue from non-aviation services at the airport.  El Paso Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Lubbock-Cooper Pirates beat the Del Valle Conquistadores 45-42 at Conquest Stadium on Thursday in the first round of the UIL State Playoffs—Jake Fette scored six touchdowns for Del Valle even though his team fell short. The Pirates will play the winner of Walnut Grove and Seguin—details will be confirmed later.  KFOX14
