COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The YMCA of El Paso in partnership with CareFree Homes is preparing for the 49th Annual Turkey Trot scheduled for November 27, the largest Thanksgiving Day run in the region that features a 5K race and a one-mile fun run for runners of all ages (4 to 80). Proceeds will support YMCA programs that help local families with affordable memberships and services.  KFOX14
  • El Paso is kicking off its holiday season with many family events, including the Sun Bowl Thanksgiving Parade at 10 a.m. on Nov. 27 (led by chef Aarón Sánchez) and the WinterFest lights parade on Nov. 22 in Downtown. Additional activities such as Turkey Trot runs, free holiday films, and Christmas lights shows will keep the festive spirit alive through December.  El Paso Matters
  • The Ysleta Mission Gift Shop will host its annual Noche Buena Christmas Faire from November 22 to December 28 at 131 S. Zaragoza Rd. in El Paso—featuring work from more than 20 local artisans and guided tours of the historic Ysleta Mission on select dates with free admission.  KFOX14
  • Local organizations and businesses are providing free Thanksgiving meals and food drives for families in need, with events scheduled from November 22 through November 27.   • Winterfest 2025 begins tomorrow at 5 p.m. at San Jacinto Plaza in Downtown El Paso with a lights parade featuring over 55 floats and an expected crowd of 75,000. The celebration also includes a 45-foot tall Christmas tree — a boost from last year's tree — the return of a gingerbread house and tic-tac-toe game, an open skating rink with $12 tickets, a holiday market, a food truck village and opportunities to take photos with Santa.  KVIA

  • A fire broke out at La Esparanza Tortilla Factory on Doniphan Drive near Anthony Avenue at 7:47 a.m.—the scene is now clear with no injuries reported as the El Paso County Sheriff's Office issued a traffic alert for the area.  KVIA

  • La Rotativa in El Paso is urging customers to buy and freeze its holiday tamales early since they often sell out by mid-morning with New Year's orders set to open after Christmas. Owner Efren Carrera explained that the store limits orders per customer — a measure to help everyone get a chance — and only accepts cash.  El Paso Times

  • Downtown El Paso will celebrate WinterFest for its 10th anniversary as city crews light up San Jacinto Plaza with over 1 million lights— including a 55-foot holiday tree and oversized decorations.  El Paso Inc.

  • Two EPCC chefs offered advice to help families prepare a budget-friendly Thanksgiving meal as they face rising grocery prices and SNAP challenges. They recommend shopping early, using seasonal produce — and choosing alternatives like a turkey breast to reduce costs while keeping the meal tasty.  El Paso Matters

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTEP will build a new 456-bed student housing complex for $108 million after the Board of Regents approved the project this week—this four-story co-ed dorm with single and double occupancy rooms, a fitness center, lounges, a study room, and a large dining hall with a built-in plan is set to open in 2028. The project comes as the campus has been at 100% capacity for four years with a 15% jump in housing applications over the last two years.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Infant botulism cases tied to a ByHeart formula recall have reached 31 across 15 states—Texas reporting two cases—since the recall was announced on November 8. The company recalled all batches of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula while urging parents to stop using the product and seek care if symptoms occur.  El Paso Times
