Good morning, El Paso. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 29th of November.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local shops are preparing for a busy Christmas season as DOC's Unique Collectibles, known for high-end items, expects more foot traffic after a government shutdown led to lower sales last year—store managers now offer flexible payment options to help local shoppers.  KVIA
  • In El Paso, Black Friday saw fewer shoppers in store as many customers turned to online deals when early access started on Thanksgiving—Academy Sports and Outdoors at 801 South Mesa Hills Drive said the early morning crowd did not form as in past years.  El Paso Times
  • Gozo's Ice Cream celebrated the opening of its second location in East El Paso on Friday at 9640 Montwood Dr., Suite E200 — the ribbon-cutting ceremony featured all-day specials like $1 single scoops, $1 hot cocoa, and $5 off merchandise while continuing the company's mission to provide meaningful employment for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  KFOX14
  • El Paso small businesses are set to benefit from House Bill 9 that exempts up to $125,000 of inventory from tax (including city, county, and school district taxes) starting in the new year. The law may boost local business growth while impacting taxpayers by over $442 million by 2027, and local officials are yet to comment on its effects.  KFOX14
  • Today is small business Saturday, a tradition that began in 2010 by American Express and was sponsored by the Small Business Association since 2011. Local shoppers can help small businesses (like DOC's Unique Collectibles) boost their yearly profits (a crucial boost during the busy holiday season) by choosing to shop local.  KVIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michelada Fest will take place at Ascarate Park starting May 2 with a two-day weekend of live music, dancing, and michelada vendors—tickets are on sale now for general and VIP access—children 12 and under will enter for free.  KFOX14
  • Fred Loya marks 20 years of his free Christmas Lights show tonight from 6 to 9 at 12001 Paseo de Oro—guests can enjoy hot chocolate and cookies as part of the celebration. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Greg Abbott signed Texas House Bill 8 on Wednesday, replacing the STAAR exam with three shorter tests spread through the school year — a change that gives parents quick access to scores and helps ease test anxiety. Four changes start this December and most major adjustments will not take effect until the 2027-2028 school year — officials say this new approach will help shift longstanding testing practices.  KFOX14
  • UTEP approved a $108M student housing complex to add 1,500 on-campus beds and ease a four-year trend of full enrollment, with the project set to open in 2028 on the north side of Kidd Field. The project is financed through the Revenue Financing System and includes a $5M matching grant from the Paul L. Foster Family Foundation—paving the way for future planning that may support a new law school.  El Paso Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • El Paso-Juárez 10K has been rescheduled for January 17 after a postponement from Nov. 17 due to a government shutdown, with over 2,500 runners invited to register by month’s end. At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, El Paso County will host a community meeting at Ascarate Park Pavilion — which will review bond-funded park renovations including new trails, shelters, and a festival area — while the city received a $13 million TxDOT grant for a shared-use path, launched an Adopt-A-Street pilot, and Gov. Abbott appointed GECU’s Crystal Long to the state economic board as UT System Regents approved new rules for faculty advisory groups.  El Paso Matters
