COMMUNITY NEWS

  • El Paso faces rising food insecurity as Deputy Director John Martin at the Opportunity Center warns that available resources fall short—35% of residents now lack enough food. Martin urges local leaders and organizations to boost donations and creative support—hoping a coordinated community effort will help those in need.  KFOX14
  • Hospice El Paso is hosting a toy drive to honor the holiday wish of 7-year-old Kenia Marisol Huerta Medina, who is asking for new unwrapped gifts for underserved children while she battles cancer. Donations must be dropped off at 8515 Lockheed Drive by Dec. 10—offering local children a chance to share in her spirit of giving.  KFOX14
  • El Paso’s Child Crisis Center announced that Andrew Castañeda is its new Executive Director—he brings over 20 years of childcare experience and a clear vision to expand services for children and families.  KVIA

  • El Paso’s La Nube STEAM Discovery Center won an international award for being the best children’s museum after competing with four other global institutions—this honor recognizes the center's excellence in STEAM learning.  El Paso Inc.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Jose Etchart spotted about 30 desert bighorn sheep climbing the Franklin Mountains on a mild October morning and noted newborn lambs—the first born in El Paso in many years. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department translocated the animals and is working with TxDOT to install warning signs after a recent road collision killed one ewe.  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SNAP food benefits are being distributed again, but officials said recipients may soon need to work 80 hours a month to keep their support. A report found that the change could lead to 2.4 million people, including 300,000 parents, losing benefits while some states may begin enforcing the rule in December.  KFOX14
  • The Texas Transportation Commission approved over $31 million from Transportation Alternatives funding for two parts of the Paso del Norte Trail, which will extend the path along Magoffin Avenue to the zoo and create a connection among Socorro, San Elizario, and Clint — officials said the approval raises the total secured funds to $88 million for a 70-mile system with 21 completed miles and 31 miles planned for design or construction.  KVIA
  • Texas gave $5.2 million from opioid settlement funds to El Paso’s city, county and hospital district, yet less than a third has been spent on opioid risk reduction. Officials have not finalized clear plans for the remaining funds—raising concerns over transparency and coordinated efforts.  El Paso Matters

HEALTH NEWS

  • UTEP researchers have found that targeting the protein Claudin-4 may help the immune system fight aggressive ovarian cancer. The team tested a peptide called CMP with a PARP inhibitor in animal models — and they plan to continue this work with other universities.  KFOX14

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • QuikTrip is breaking ground on a new convenience store at 351 Redd Road where part of the Sun City Emergency Room property will be used, and it is located in far West El Paso near Mimi’s Day Care, Albertson’s and Starbucks. The project is valued at nearly $1.13 million and is owned by QT South LLC — led by Kim Filuk from Phoenix, it will soon offer a fresh retail option in the area.  El Paso Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • UTEP's volleyball team with a 25 to 4 record earned the No.6 seed in the 2025 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, marking its second NCAA Tournament appearance. The team will face North Carolina on Dec. 4 in Madison—part of the Texas regional.  KFOX14
