- ➤ Local trailblazer Alicia Chacón, the first woman elected county judge, was honored at a funeral Mass on Dec. 3 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lower Valley (nearly 100 community members attended) as she was remembered for her fight for Hispanic rights and civic service. El Paso Times
- ➤ ABC-7's Good Morning El Paso is hosting Operation Noel at Fred Loya today to raise $45,000 for warm coats for children served by local nonprofits. The telethon starts at 6:30 p.m. (donors can call 9158002215 to participate). KVIA
- ➤ El Paso welcomes a busy week of community events. The El Paso Matters 9.15K begins Sunday, Dec. 7 at San Jacinto Plaza while Texas Tech Health El Paso hosts its Third Annual Lighting Campus for Hope Friday, Dec. 5 at 130 Rick Francis St., with winter markets & library meetups. El Paso Matters
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A water main break closed some westbound lanes on Montana Ave. at Desert Meadows Road last night; crews and the county sheriff are addressing the issue. TxDOT reported the break just after 11 p.m. and noted that two lanes remain closed (no clearing time provided yet). KVIA
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Los Embajadores del Mariachi will present their Merry-achi Christmas show at Plaza Theatre on Dec. 19 at 8 p.m., marking founder José Hernández’s 50th year promoting mariachi music with Ballet Folclórico Quetzales joining the performance. KFOX14
- ➤ Comedian Mario Aguilar will bring his 'Diezmadre!' tour (celebrating a decade of comedy) to Plaza Theatre on Feb. 13, 2026; tickets go on sale (at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5). KFOX14

- ➤ Texas lawmakers approved a plan to end the STAAR exam and replace it with progress checks during the school year to reduce student stress and provide consistent teacher feedback. School districts in El Paso await further guidance from the Texas Education Agency on assessment frequency. KVIA
- ➤ Canutillo Independent School District named Dr. Josue D. Borrego as its superintendent finalist with trustees set to vote on his contract in January. He is expected to succeed Superintendent Emeritus Dr. Pedro Galaviz after earning praise for raising campus ratings. KVIA
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The FDA recalled shredded cheese sold at Target, Walmart and Sprouts on Dec.3 because some products may contain metal fragments that could cause temporary health issues. Consumers were advised to stop using the affected products and return them for a refund. El Paso Times

- ➤ The Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl Selection Sunday event is scheduled for this weekend at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — it builds excitement for the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 at Sun Bowl Stadium. KFOX14
- ➤ UTEP football signed 25 players including three from local high schools for the 2026 season during the December signing period; the team will join the Mountain West Conference next season as coach Scotty Walden welcomed talent from Texas high schools (including local El Paso athletes).
