COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over 10,000 wreaths honoring veterans will be placed at Ft Bliss National Cemetery tomorrow. Trucks will deliver them by 7:30 a.m. and ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. at 5200 Fred Wilson Ave (including local volunteers, veterans, and families).  KFOX14

CULTURE NEWS

  • Centro De Salud Familiar La Fe, Inc. is hosting the 2025 Segundo Barrio Matachines Celebration today from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the La Fe Culture and Technology Center in Segundo Barrio—attendees can enjoy free tamales and champurrado from Jalisco Cafe while supplies last.  KFOX14

  • HomeToGo's 2026 Travel Trends Forecast shows El Paso as an emerging destination for nature lovers (191% search increase) as many U.S. travelers plan longer, more expensive vacations next year.  KFOX14

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Canutillo ISD celebrated a reading milestone when over 200 students completed one book per week for eight weeks during its I Love to Read McDonald's program. Marcel Clarke from ABC 7 joined as a guest reader to spark a lifelong love of reading.  KVIA
  • UTEP will host four in-person Commencement ceremonies at the Don Haskins Center for over 2,900 graduates including the largest fall class (2,280 candidates) on Dec. 13 and Dec. 14. Guests can enter early for free parking and view livestreams on the UTEP website.  KFOX14
  • College-bound high school seniors in El Paso can now apply for the Dr. Xavier De La Torre Leader of Impact Scholarship, a $2,000 annual award established by TALAS El Paso as part of its Keep Moving fund (honoring his 10-year leadership at Ysleta ISD).  KFOX14

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT explained that missing left-turn markings on Montwood result from road design (single left turns) that minimizes conflicts, while Irma D. noted the inconsistency compared to the marked turns near I-10. The issue highlights local transportation choices affecting daily commutes.  KFOX14
  • Marathon Petroleum’s air permit renewal for its refinery will be discussed at a public meeting on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. at Riverside High School in the Lower Valley, as the TCEQ reviews comments and considers a contested-case hearing request+ a step that could impact local air quality and operations.  El Paso Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Stephanie Eschriche, an ICU nurse from The Hospitals of Providence Memorial Campus, celebrated her recovery from melanoma at an annual tree lighting ceremony yesterday. Colleagues, family, and friends gathered (cheering her success) as she was marked as a cancer survivor.  KFOX14
  • El Paso health officials reported 23 whooping cough cases through October, nearly quadruple last year’s count amid a statewide surge of over 3,500 cases. They advise getting vaccinated and seeking early treatment (especially for infants) to protect the community.  El Paso Matters

  • Bel Air High School boys soccer coach Sergio Delgado faces a three-year suspension (Category B violation) under UIL rules, announced Thursday. Ysleta ISD placed him on administrative leave pending an investigation and named interim coach Steve Salcido.  KFOX14
