COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Members of the Far West Texas Patriot Guard Riders escorted trucks with holiday wreaths to Fort Bliss Cemetery today, where organizers placed them on veterans' graves to honor service sacrifices.  KVIA
  • A 63-year-old man in 79907 needs essential home repairs, including fixing his roof and replacing his damaged front door frame to allow safe wheelchair access. The Senior Fund, managed by the Rio Grande Area Agency on Aging plus Paso del Norte Community Foundation, seeks donations to help him maintain independence.  El Paso Times
  • Children from the Borderland received winter jackets (vital for cold days) on Saturday when the Boys and Girls Club of El Paso visited Fox Acura; Operation Noel donations funded the effort.  KVIA
  • Abundant Church handed out over 3,000 toys to children under 10 and 1,000 Christmas food boxes to families in the San Elizario Independent School District last weekend. The church will give away 6,000 more toys in Canutillo, El Paso, Ysleta, and Gadsden school districts later this week.  KVIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yelp’s Elite Squad released its top 25 tamale spots list on Monday, featuring two restaurants in Dallas and Houston but leaving out our local offerings. Pepe’s Tamales, remembered for President Bush’s historic Christmas Eve order (a cherished moment in our culinary history), remains celebrated today.  El Paso Times
  • ABC-7 is hosting the inaugural Borderland Battle of the Bulbs contest where residents can submit a 15 to 20 second video of their holiday lights for a chance to win $500 before Dec. 22 at 1 p.m. The contest is sponsored by Fred Loya’s El Paso Christmas Lights.  KVIA
  • Sun City Sawdust is a DIY studio in West El Paso offering projects such as painting pottery, wood, canvas and holiday ornaments ready after quick kiln firing. The studio welcomes visitors Thursday through Sunday with no reservations required — a friendly space for local art.  KVIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTEP awarded degrees to thousands of Fall graduates during weekend commencements; the College of Education + Engineering and Liberal Arts held ceremonies Saturday while Science, Business, Pharmacy and Health programs celebrated Sunday amid cheers from family and friends.  KVIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Judges overseeing El Paso Electric’s rate case recommended keeping the customer charge at $9.25 (instead of $13.71) and lowering the shareholder profit margin to 9.4%, which may reduce the proposed $22 monthly increase. The Public Utility Commission will deliver a final decision in February.  KVIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Families and NICU graduates gathered at Las Palmas Medical Center to celebrate the babies' growth during a reunion that featured a festive visit from Santa. The event brought together nurses, doctors, and parents, strengthening bonds formed during extended NICU stays (from weeks to years).  KVIA

SPORTS NEWS

  • El Paso amateur boxer Moises Rodriguez won a silver medal in the 121-pound division at the USA Boxing Nationals on Saturday, Dec. 13 in Lubbock. He will join the Team USA training camp in Colorado Springs in January (dates pending) to prepare for future competitions.  El Paso Times
