  • Eliseo Silva Fernandez, a 101-year-old WWII veteran, was honored yesterday at City Hall as the community recognized his service. The city declared December 22 as his special day (Fernandez earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star while serving with Merrill's Marauders).  KFOX14
  • Autism Hope El Paso won $7,000 in City Bank Community Rewards as part of a $60,000 initiative to support local nonprofits. The award recognizes the nonprofit's strong role in boosting community services.  El Paso Inc.

  • Just Cheesecake Outlet opened its second location on the East Side on Dec. 22 at 10:48 a.m. to meet high demand and support holiday orders for Christmas and New Year gatherings + the owner plans a third outlet.  El Paso Times

  • Downtown El Paso's Plaza Theatre is recognized as the top-grossing theater in Texas (ranked No. 22 worldwide in Billboard’s venue list) after a strong year of performances.  El Paso Inc.

  • El Paso City Council approved an MOU with Concanaco Servytur Mexico today to boost cross-border business ties. The deal will strengthen cooperation & support new trade opportunities.  El Paso Inc.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in El Paso & Juárez face longer wait times at border crossings as last-minute holiday shopping boosts travel, with some waiting at the Bridge of the Americas. U.S. Customs advises travelers to declare goods to avoid fines.  KVIA
  • On Dec. 22, UMC El Paso’s board approved a 14% pay raise for CEO Jacob Cintron that increased his salary to $1,128,582 and added a $346,449 bonus—changes retroactive to Oct. 1. Six board members voted in favor during the public meeting.  El Paso Times
  • The El Paso Environmental Services Department announced changes to holiday trash and recycling schedules with no collection on December 25 to 26 and January 1 to 2. Rescheduled collections will occur on December 27 and January 3, and residents may drop off live holiday trees starting December 27.  KFOX14

  • A community health center in Segundo Barrio made over 200 food baskets for families using donated canned goods & non-perishables collected during Saturday’s 31st Annual Navidad De La Fe Luminarias event at Scenic Drive, and monetary donations will be accepted on Monday and Tuesday.  KFOX14
  • Hospitals of Providence has introduced the new Mako 4 robotic surgery system at its facility in El Paso + the advanced technology is set to improve patient care with more precise robotic assistance during procedures.  El Paso Inc.

  • Senior Maskim Lares and his mother expressed disappointment after head coach Matthew Taylor was relieved at Eastlake—citing their long-standing bond from when Maskim began playing as a freshman. Principal Gilbert Martinez's explanation left them unsatisfied with the decision.  KVIA
